7 Facts You Probably Didn’t Know About Burna Boy

Since 2018’s “Outside,” Burna Boy hadn’t slowed down one bit. He’s since released two albums (including a Grammy-winning one), and there’s only like two artists in Nigeria who can even be in the same conversation as the PH boy.

Now he’s coming with a new album. His first since releasing “Twice As Tall” in 2020 and winning a Grammy in 2021. The rollout for the new album, dubbed “Love, Damini” has already begun with the May release of “Last Last,” the lead single.

The other day, Burna Boy turned 31 and that seemed like it was wrong because who knew the boy was that old? Got people wondering what else they didn’t know about the “Ye” singer. Well, here are a few quick facts about Burna Boy that you probably didn’t know.

1. Older Than Davido

Yes, maybe Burna Boy is the newest of the Wizkid – Davido – Olamide bunch, but he’s still more than a year older than OBO. While Burna just turned 31, Davido wouldn’t be 30 until his next birthday coming up in November.

 

It’s very easy to think maybe Burna Boy is not that old, but with Olamide having only two years on him, he’s not even mates with any of the new school guys. He’s an OG.

2. Ajebo

A lot of people wouldn’t wanna believe this. But as opposed to being a poor Port Harcourt boy that became a gangster because he was always on the street, Burna Boy is actually an ajebutter.

His family wasn’t poor and he grew up in Lagos and attended private schools with expensive fees. He may claim to be a gangster but that’s not because he had to sell drugs on the street to feed or anything. In that way, he’s not a street boy at all.

3. Manager

For a while now, his mother, Bose Ogulu has been his manager. However, she became popular around 2019 when Burna Boy almost won a Grammy.

While it’s not a very popular thing here in Nigeria, it’s actually not new for pop stars to have their parents as managers. Anyway, there’s no getting to Burna Boy unless through his mum. He’s a real mama’s boy.

4. Sister

Burna Boy has a sister who is also actually an artist. Her name is Nissi. She has made one EP and collaborated with Ajebo Hustlers on their hit song called “Symbiosis.”

Nissi is Burna Boy’s blood sister and she, like her brother, is also managed by their mother.

5. Drake

Burna Boy wasn’t the first Nigerian artist to work with Canadian pop star, Drake. But he did work with him way back in 2016 also.

According to stories, apparently, Burna Boy sent five songs for a Drake project, but the rapper didn’t end up using them. But in 2017, Burna Boy could have had his own Drake feature.

6. Davido

While many people actually got to know Burna Boy when his “Like To Party” became a hit in 2013, it was in 2011 that Burna Boy had got an introduction to the industry with a Davido collab.

A song called “Trumpet” was the first song that made industry heads take an interest in the PH boy, and it was for one simple reason: Davido was on the track.

What Burna Boy would have become if he never did that song with Davido? We’ll never know. But I like to think, that song changed the trajectory of his career.

7. Mr. 2Kay

In 2017, Mr. 2Kay was robbed at gunpoint at Eko Hotels and he claimed Burna Boy was responsible for the attack. In an interview, he said although Burna Boy called to deny that he was involved in the robbery, he apologized.

Mr. 2Kay said Burna Boy told him on the phone that it was possible his road manager, Joel Kantiok, who was paraded by the police, had heard that he was upset with Mr 2Kay and decided to stage the robbery himself.

That’s about the most gangster thing Burna Boy has ever been involved in. And they settled it out of court, too.
