History of the Mysterious Paintings of Tassili
The Mysterious Paintings of Tassili
We are in southeast Algeria, at the center of the enigmatic Sahara Desert. This is Tuareg territory, and only they have been witnesses, generation after generation, to all the excitement caused since the Legion notified the world of the incredible discovery they made in one of Tassili's caves during World War I.

It was in 1956 when Henri Lothe, a daring ethnographer and explorer, wanted to go further. He organized an expedition with the Tuaregs and ventured through dangerous gorges, slopes, and narrow passages between the caves to see what lay beyond. To see things that Westerners had never seen and that only the natives knew.

That's when Lothe spotted an unsettling massif called "Jabbaren," a word that in Tuareg means "Giants." It was astonishing because those paintings were very different from the rest. No longer did they depict scenes of hunting or gathering, there, strange beings with round heads simply stood before his astonished gaze. Enormous creatures that appeared to wear some sort of space helmets.

The most impressive was the one that measured over 6 meters, and our explorer, Henry Lothe, didn't hesitate to call it "The Great Martian God."

Research has revealed that the mysterious paintings of Tassili n'Ajjer span an extensive period, from the Neolithic to more recent times. Each layer of art provides a unique window into different eras and cultures, allowing researchers to paint an evolutionary picture of the communities that inhabited the region.

The diversity and richness of artistic representations in Tassili n'Ajjer led to its recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1982. This status underscores the universal importance of this site as a testament to human creativity and an invaluable record of prehistoric life.

Window to the past: Everyday life in the paintings
The Mysterious Paintings of Tassili
The artistic representations in Tassili are diverse and rich in detail, showing scenes ranging from domestic activities to community rituals. Images depict individuals engaged in agricultural tasks, tending to animals, participating in dances and celebrations, and embarking on hunting expeditions. These scenes provide invaluable information about the occupations, traditions, and social interactions of these communities.

Anthropomorphic, or human figures, are represented with a high degree of detail, allowing inferences about clothing, adornments, and utensils of the time. The clothing and accessories painted on the rocks show striking similarities to traditional attire in various regions of Africa, suggesting a cultural continuity over millennia.

In contrast, zoomorphic, or animal figures, appear in both domestic and wild contexts, reflecting the diversity of fauna that coexisted with humans. Representations of domestic animals like goats and cows are integrated into herding scenes, while images of wild animals like antelopes and giraffes are often shown in hunting situations.

Beyond the physical and tangible aspects of everyday life, the mysterious paintings of Tassili also suggest spiritual and symbolic elements. The presence of figures that could be interpreted as "deities" and scenes of dances and rituals indicate a spiritual dimension intrinsic to the life of these communities, reflecting their beliefs, values, and aspirations.

Tassili, an illustrated history... and something more
Rock paintings in Algeria
For most archaeologists and historians, there is no doubt: the mysterious paintings of Tassili n'Ajjer are something like a historical legacy represented in rock paintings. Over 1,500 graphic testimonies that show us the past of the Sahara in all its wonderful biological and cultural diversity. We can see flowers, cypresses, olive trees, lime trees... And what about the fauna? On the walls of the Tassili caves, we marvel at antelopes running across the plains, lions, ostriches, elephants, and rivers teeming with dangerous crocodiles. A scene full of life very different from the desert it is today.

We see men hunting and swimming. Cultivating. Everyday scenes from a millennium-old past where scientists don't see anything strange or unsettling. Furthermore, they disdainfully censor individuals like Henry Lothe, who labeled certain older areas of Tassili as evidence of "Martian art."

In addition to Lothe, another specialist named Erich Von Däniken later emerged. He defended once again the idea that many paintings actually brought us the testimony of a time when humans had their first contact with creatures from other worlds, with gods with large heads who established agreements and relationships with the human race.

Von Däniken, for example, draws our attention to one of the paintings, where a group of "alien explorers" appears to accompany a group of women toward an oval object resembling a small spaceship. Such claims are the ones that always cause the indignation of the most staunch and cautious historical community, unable to accept such daring ideas.

However, the mysterious paintings of Tassili are a stage to discover. A place from which each of us can draw our own conclusions. The everyday scenes are a beautiful example of the ecological richness of a past when the Sahara was still a paradise. The paintings where that strange race of giants appears are still a challenge for curious minds like ours, eager for new perspectives and interpretations.
